Unlike direct thermal labels, there is no ink embedded in the substrate of thermal transfer labels. Thermal transfer labels need a ribbon to transfer ink, and they cannot be used without the ribbon. However, they are a more stable choice because they have a much longer service life than direct heating and are less likely to scratch or fade.
Thermal transfer technology uses thermal ribbon, which melts to the substrate when it passes through the thermal print head. This process prints images and text onto the label.

Ink configuration
Once you have determined which thermal ribbon material is suitable for your printing needs, you need to consider printer compatibility. Each printer model has its own specific functions, so the ink position on the ribbon is important to the printing process.
Thermal transfer ribbons are divided into two categories: coated side inward (CSI) and coated side out (CSO). These classifications refer to whether the ink is located on the inside or outside of the ribbon roll. This position determines how the ribbon is wound and fed into the printer, which affects how the substrate is printed. Depending on the type of printer, you must use one or the other.
Need a simple trick to determine whether your functional area is CSI or CSO? Just stick the label on the outside of the thermal ribbon roll. If the ink sticks to the label, it is a CSO ribbon. If it is not, it is a CSI ribbon.
